Kris Smith, PhD (postdoctoral scholar)
Kris Smith (personal website here) is a postdoc in the Human Sociality Lab studying long distance relationships and natural resource management in Tanzania. He received his PhD in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2019, where he also completed a two-year postdoc in the Social Behavioral Science Initiative. Broadly, his research interests are on the evolutionary and cultural origins of human cooperation and morality. He also works with the Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania, studying how they maintain group cooperation and what traits they prefer in potential social partners.
Kris Smith (sitio personal enlazado) es un postdoc en el Lab de la Socialidad Humana estudiando las relaciones de larga distancia y la gestión de recursos naturales en Tanzania. Ollie Shannon, MA (PhD student)
Ollie Shannon is a PhD student focused on queering evolutionary anthropology. They plan to apply Queer theory in their work, while at the same time focusing on concrete evolutionary questions and seeking answers through the scientific process. They received their MA in Anthropology from Boise State University in 2021. Their thesis focused on understanding cultural impacts on health in the Queer community with special attention paid to rural Queer communities. For their dissertation work, they are interested in broadening the focus of cooperative breeding to include fictive (chosen) kin in polyamorous communities, including the sentiments, attitudes, emotions, and investment associated with commitment and child rearing.
Ollie Shannon está cumpliendo su PhD, enfocándose en queering la antropología evolutiva. Su meta es aplicar la teoría Queer en su trabajo, mientrás a la misma vez enfocándose en preguntas evolutivas concretas y buscando respuestras por el proceso científico. Elle recibió su maestría en antropología de la Universidad Estatal de Boise en 2021. Su tésis enfocó en entender las impactas culturales a la salud en la comunidad Queer, con lo más atención a las comunidades Queer rurales. Hope Jared (BA student)
Hope Jared is finishing her degree in Human Biology. She's working with Anne on research related to climate change adaptation, and with Kris and Anne on a project on long-distance relationships. Hope is interested in theory and applications in evolutionary anthropology.
Hope Jared está en proceso de cumplir su licenciatura en Biología Humana. Colabora con Anne en una investigación relacionada con la adaptación al cambio climático, y con Kris y Anne en una investigación enfocada en las relaciones de larga distancia. Eric Hubbard, MA
Eric Hubbard completed his MA in Evolutionary Anthropology in 2022. He also has a MA in International Security Studies from the University of Arizona and a BA in Anthropology with a minor in Linguistics at Missouri State University. While at WSU, Eric studied how non-kin alloparents may benefit children. He found that godparents do not affect child educational outcomes for the Moseten and Interculturales, but he does have suggestions for how we can better understand the impact of godparents on child outcomes in the future. Eric is now Research Director at Nupoint Marketing.
Eric Hubbard cumplió su maestría en antropología evolutiva en 2022. También tiene una maestría en estudios de seguridad internacional de la Universidad de Arizona y su licenciatura en antropología con énfasis en lingüística de la Universidad del Estado de Missouri. Aracely Mendoza, BA
McNair Scholar Aracely Mendoza graduated from WSU with a degree in Anthropology and Digital Technology & Culture in 2020. While at WSU, she studied how Latinx identities are negotiated in Washington state and Virginia. In 2019, she received the WSU Pollart Scholarship for her work. She hopes to pursue a graduate degree in clinical psychology.

I am currently accepting students interested in completing a PhD in either evolutionary or cultural anthropology. Applicants must be open to completing fieldwork with humans, whether outside or inside the US, and willing to take a scientific approach to anthropology, including the pre-registration of research projects, the collection of quantitative data, and the rigorous analysis of data using cutting-edge statistical models. (We'll train you in all of those things here at WSU; you just need to be open to those approaches!) I especially encourage applications from students with interests in:

Social and economic changes affecting populations globally, including (but not limited to) climate change, natural resource management, globalization, and market integration

Applied work, including (but not limited to) active collaboration with study populations, governmental- or non-governmental organizations, and schools

Cooperation, including (but not limited to) collective action, common-pool resource problems, partner choice, and bargaining

Risk management, including (but not limited to) food security, economic security, mobility and migration

Latin America and the Latinx diaspora, Tanzania and the Tanzanian diaspora, the Northwest United States
Our three-field department has notable strengths in (alphabetically): Africa, agent-based modeling, applied anthropology, biocultural anthropology, cultural evolution, demography, ethnobotany, evolutionary psychology, foragers, horticulturalists, human behavioral ecology, human biology, human ecology, Latin America and Latinx communities, mathematical modeling, the Pacific and Inland Northwest (US and Canada), pastoralists, primatology, and the Southwestern US.
